Oral Surgery
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) includes a broad spectrum of care ranging from the simple extraction of diseased teeth to complex jaw reconstructive surgery. The Charlottesville oral surgeon at Hollymead Dental Arts, Martin Hoard MD, DDS, is Board Certified in OMS and licensed in both medicine and dentistry in Virginia.
The first priority for many patients is the treatment of acutely painful conditions such as abscessed, fractured or carious teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, as well as painful oral lesions. But OMS’s provide numerous other services. Oral mucosal or jaw growths must be biopsied before definitive treatment. Missing teeth can be replaced with individual implants or implant supported dentures. If there is insufficient bone or gum to support implants, bone grafting or soft tissue grafting procedures are available to augment the area where implants are indicated. Most bite problems can be treated with orthodontics but some may require jaw surgery in addition to orthodontics and Oral Surgeons are trained to provide this service. Some of these more complex procedures such as cysts or tumors of the jaw require hospital services and Dr. Hoard’s affiliation with UVA Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery makes this process easier.
Oral Surgery can be performed with many types of anesthesia including local anesthesia, sedation or intravenous deep sedation all of which Oral Surgeons are trained to provide and are available options at HDA. HDA also has the latest in diagnostic and treatment planning technology including cone beam CT radiography.
Referrals from dentists, physicians and other patients are welcome. Our staff can provide expert advice on insurance coverage as well as financial guidance if needed.
